The Catalina dining room is a wonderful indoor/outdoor space with stunning unobstructed views of Shark Island, Harbour ferries, windsurfers, sailing boats, and seaplanes in Rose Bay. Rose Bay was the site of Australia's first international airport. Flying boats, including Sunderlands and the famous Catalinas, had their base in the bay. Seaplanes continue to use Rose Bay as a landing site. Resident pelicans visit every afternoon hoping for remnants of the premium quality fish.
"The menu is driven by seasonal produce. At the moment there is a definite Spanish influence," says Executive Chef Paul McMahon. Paul sources premium seafood sourced from around Australia, but there are non seafood options on the menu such as Jamon Iberico de bellota; dry aged Angus sirloin; roasted suckling pig (exclusive to Catalina); and NZ venison. The menu changes regularly, and is supplemented daily with a small selection of additional dishes. There is careful attention to detail towards all aspects of the menu: sourdough loaves are baked on the premises twice a day; the smoked salmon is smoked, cured and sliced in-house; and the best Sydney rock oysters are sourced daily from up and down the NSW coast, and shucked to order. We believe them to be the best oysters available in Sydney.
Menu favourites include freshly shucked Sydney rock oysters ($4 each); blue swimmer crab tartlet, fine herb and mesclun salad ($32); Catalan style whitebait with lemon and a fried duck egg($28); snapper fillet on potato and garlic mash with lemon caper butter ($45); pan fried whole flounder with nut brown butter, sage, and preserved lemon($40); the sushi ($30) and sashimi ($29) by Master Sushi chef, Yoshinori Fuchigami (available Wednesday – Sunday).
CATALINA is one of only a few restaurants in Sydney whose kitchen remains open from midday to late. Diners are welcome all day (full menu available).
CATALINA owners, veteran restaurateurs Judy and Michael McMahon, and son Paul (Executive Chef), believe in a total restaurant experience for their customers: "We constantly strive for Catalina to continue to be Sydney's favourite place to eat by the water."
To that end, the best fresh produce is sourced and prepared with the respect it deserves. Michael McMahon and Gourmet Traveller Sommelier of the year, Simon Curkovic, have developed one of the best wine lists in the country: a large, thoughtfully chosen Australian and Imported wine list of over 600 wines, with over 30 wines available by the glass. The staff are well-trained, pleasant and knowledgable.
